Fifth Duck Race organised by Furtwangen University students
Under bright sunshine, around 1,400 rubber ducks were set afloat at this year’s duck race on the Breg River. This marked the fifth time the race was organised by Business Information Systems students in the “Project Management in Logistics” course. Michael Kost, the course instructor, welcomed the large crowd of spectators both on-site and watching the livestream. Afterwards, patron and Mayor Florian Merz and Prof. Martin Aichele, Chief Marketing Officer of HFU, said a few brief words. They emphasised the excellent collaboration between the university and the city in organising this time-honoured event. The two then released the mayor’s duck and the university’s duck into the water first, before the other rubber ducks followed. Many of those present followed the race from the start at the Colestine-Eisele Bridge along the racecourse to the finish line at the bridge on Baumannstraße. The ducks were herded together at the finish line so that only one duck at a time could swim through. The ducks’ numbers were recorded, and the results were then announced on-site and online. Prizes for the winning ducks were sponsored by regional companies.
For the seven-member project team, the focus was not only on having fun but also on optimising the operation of the event. This year, for the first time, duck tickets could also be purchased online. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Bregtäler Children's Fund.
