„Brains behind the Tech“ lecture offers insights into development of vehicle infotainment at Mercedes

How are research findings from the lab adapted so that they can later be implemented directly in vehicles, where they enhance safety? During a talk in new “Brains behind the Tech” lecture series at Furtwangen University (HFU) Jessica Kienzle (Mercedes-Benz AG) will demonstrate how distraction research conducted in driving simulators and real vehicles is translated into concrete guidelines and functions for infotainment systems − and how closely industrial research is tied to the final product.

The lecture, entitled “Legibility Without Distraction: How Mercedes-Benz Brings Research to the Road,” will take place on 20 May from 7.00 - 8.15pm on the Tuttlingen campus (Kronenstraße 16), Room AE.01. Participation is possible both in person and online via Zoom.

Jessica Kienzle will focus on issues related to user-centered design of modern infotainment systems: How can important vehicle information be displayed in a way that allows it to be quickly and reliably understood without unnecessarily distracting the driver? What role do tests in driving simulators and in real-world traffic play in the development of new features? And how closely is industrial research integrated with subsequent implementation in the vehicle? Jessica Kienzle completed the Master’s program in Human Factors at HFU before beginning her career at Mercedes-Benz. Her career path thus exemplifies precisely the connection that the event series aims to highlight.

The lecture is aimed at students, prospective students, companies and the general public. It offers insight into current projects at Mercedes-Benz and demonstrates how infotainment systems are developed today through an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of technology, psychology and design.

The event is part of the “Brains behind the Tech” lecture series organided by Faculty II at HFU. Through this series, the university highlights how the Engineering Psychology and Human Factors programmes are applied in real-world projects and the diverse career paths that result from these programmes.
