Professor Grace Komuhangi is new to Faculty III
As the new professor of midwifery science at Furtwangen University, Prof. Grace Komuhangi introduces herself by answering our three questions for new faculty members:
What professional experience do you bring to Furtwangen University?
My professional journey began over 20 years ago in Uganda, where I worked as a midwife in various healthcare settings — from community health centres to assignments in refugee camps with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Early on, I developed a special interest in midwifery education and took on teaching and coordination roles at universities, as well as responsibilities in the quality assurance of academic programmes.
I earned a BSc and an MSc in Midwifery and Women’s Health and recently expanded my profile with a postgraduate diploma in Medical Education from the University of South Wales to further deepen my didactic and pedagogical skills in the context of modern teaching strategies.
This qualification ties directly into my research — since moving to Germany, I have been pursuing a PhD at the Heidelberg Institute for Global Health at Heidelberg University on innovative teaching methods in midwifery education and their impact on students’ evidence-based practical competencies. At the same time, I work as a freelance midwife in the Cham district and teach as a certified online instructor in the MSc in Women’s Health at the University of Buckingham.
How did you first learn about Furtwangen University?
I first learned about Furtwangen University through my academic work and professional exchanges in the field of midwifery. I was particularly drawn to the university’s innovative profile and its commitment to providing a quality-assured, practice-oriented and scientifically sound midwifery education.
In which programme do you lecture, and what are you most looking forward to as a new professor at HFU?
I am particularly looking forward to actively helping shape the further development of the midwifery programme, guiding students on their path to a responsible and evidence-based profession, and working closely with colleagues to integrate teaching, research and practice. Interprofessional exchange and the opportunity to implement new teaching and learning formats are of particular importance to me in this regard.
