The state of Baden-Württemberg is creating new opportunities for collaboration on key topics with its so-called innovation campus models. Research institutions, universities and companies are working together on future-oriented topics such as mobility, sustainability and AI. The University of Stuttgart recently hosted the first networking meeting for the new “Security and Defense” innovation campus.

President Dr. Alexandra Bormann and security expert Prof. Dr. Marion Meinert from Furtwangen University (HFU) took part. “Furtwangen University is an expert in the field of civil security,” says President Bormann, “and we are continuing to expand this area of focus – including in the field of cybersecurity. An interdisciplinary and integrated approach to security and defence is becoming increasingly important in view of complex global political developments. This requires cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional research as well as highly qualified and responsibly trained specialists. We have professors specialising in this field at HFU and are one of the few universities in Germany that trains security engineers.”

The exchange with other experts has already generated many new ideas. “Concrete ideas for joint projects and collaborations emerged right from the first meeting,” reports Marion Meinert. She is Professor of Security and Hazard Prevention at Furtwangen University and Dean of Studies for the well-established “Security & Safety Engineering” (Bachelor) and “Risk, Reliability and Safety Engineering” (Master) degree programmes.

“We are very much looking forward to further exchanges and to making our contribution to the topic of security and defence in Baden-Württemberg,” said President Bormann, expressing her gratitude to the hosts, “A great start to a complex and pressing topic!”
