HFU staff explain industrial prototyping

Practical teaching at HFU: Carsten Droll and Marius Hugger use the example of a printed object to show how the interface between digital design and real production works in industrial engineering.

Tech adventures - future skills for pupils

Whether smart products or digital processes – anyone who wants to understand tomorrow's economy today must master the technology behind it. To bridge the gap between school and real innovation, 21 students from the External link opens in a new window:Deutenberg Gymnasium (GAD) recently swapped the classroom for the high-tech laboratories at Furtwangen University (HFU). This visit offered a direct insight into how the interconnection between business and technology really looks in the Black Forest.

Technology up close: from 3D models to smart homes

The tenth graders used their profile day at the Furtwangen campus to immerse themselves in the Internal link opens in the same window:Industrial Solutions Lab and the Sensor Technology Lab. Instead of just listening, they took command themselves in two specialised workshops:

  • 3D modeling & additive manufacturing: participants learned how to use Blender software, designed their own models, and then printed them out with professional 3D printers.
  • Smart home programming (Arduino): using microcontrollers and sensors, the young people developed their own automation solutions – the basis for modern IoT and smart living.

Career in focus: The interface between people, market and machine

In addition to the workshops, there were in-depth insights into business administration and engineering. During a tour of the laboratories, the students learned about current projects in the Internal link opens in the same window:Product Engineering (PEB) and Internal link opens in the same window:Marketing and Sales (MVB) bachelor's degree programmes.

For parents and teachers, this focus is crucial: it shows that studying at HFU provides the perfect blend of technical expertise and economic understanding. This makes our graduates sought-after all-rounders among global players in Villingen-Schwenningen, Tuttlingen and Freiburg.

Why HFU? Real-world experience in the Black Forest

At HFU, we believe in “learning by doing.” While large, mass universities often feel anonymous, we offer:

  • Small groups: direct contact with professors and experts from industry
  • High-end infrastructure: industry-level laboratories and software
  • Regional strength: close networking with the hidden champions of the Black Forest for internships and career starts
