Prof. Dr. Bahman Azarhoushang is new member of scientific commission

Furtwangen University (HFU) warmly congratulates Prof. Dr. Bahman Azarhoushang on his appointment to the Scientific Commission of the German Science and Humanities Council. The distinguished professor of manufacturing technology and head of the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (KSF) at HFU will serve as a member of the Scientific Commission for three years in addition to his professorship in Furtwangen. The formal appointment took place on 1 February and was made by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Dr. Alexandra Bormann, President of Furtwangen University, was among the first to congratulate him on his new role, “The appointment of Prof. Dr. Bahman Azarhoushang to the Scientific Commission of the German Science and Humanities Council is a great honour and a very special recognition of his outstanding research achievements. We are very proud that a member of our university will now be helping to shape the national scientific system at the highest level.”

The appointment of Prof. Dr. Azarhoushang will raise the profile of the excellent research and high innovation potential of Furtwangen University and the universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg throughout Germany. His expertise and experience, particularly in the fields of precision and high-precision machining, data-driven manufacturing, and additive manufacturing, will strengthen the voice of applied sciences in the German scientific system in the long term.

Prof. Dr. Azarhoushang is the author of over 350 scientific publications, holds several patents, and is involved in numerous committees, such as the board of the research unit for engineering sciences in the Doctoral Association of the Baden-Württemberg Universities of Applied Sciences (HAW BW) and the International Committee for Abrasive Technology. His success in acquiring third-party funding – including grants from the German Research Foundation, federal, state and EU funding – as well as his commitment to young scientists, underscore his role as an outstanding scientist and experienced science manager.

“With Prof. Dr. Azarhoushang, a personality has been appointed to the Scientific Commission who stands for innovative, practical research and excellent support for young scientists. His commitment and expertise will enrich the German scientific system,” emphasised Prof. Dr. Christoph Reich, Vice-President for Research at HFU.

Prof. Dr. Bahman Azarhoushang was nominated following a selection process by the Presidents' Conference of Universities of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg. Its chairman, Prof. Dr. Stephan Trahasch, emphasised in a press release, "We need a scientific system that enables excellence where it has an immediate impact – in universities, research centres and real-world laboratories with strong partnerships with industry and society. The appointment of Prof. Dr. Bahman Azarhoushang underscores that applied research combines scientific excellence with immediate practical relevance, thereby providing important impetus for shaping the science and research landscape in order to strengthen innovative capacity.

The selection process took into account objective criteria such as third-party funding, scientific reputation, publication record and the candidates' experience in managing research institutions. The aim was to bring the scientific and institutional expertise of universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg to the commission and to provide new impetus for the further development of the German scientific system.

Prof. Dr. Bahman Azarhoushang considers the appointment a great honour and expressed his sincere gratitude for the trust placed in him, “I am very pleased to have the opportunity to contribute the perspectives of universities of applied sciences to the work of the Scientific Commission. Together, we can help to further develop the scientific system in Germany and strengthen the innovative power of our universities.”

The Scientific Commission is the central scientific policy advisory body for the federal and state governments in Germany. It makes recommendations on the further development of universities, research institutions, and the entire scientific system. The Scientific Commission consists of 24 scientists and eight public figures. Prof. Dr. Bahman Azarhoushang is one of three representatives of universities of applied sciences in this commission.
