Organic and Bio-organic Chemistry Synthesis Lab

Organic and Bio-organic Chemistry Synthesis Lab

These laboratories are mainly used for student research, practical work and theses based on (bio)organic chemical work, as well as for practical courses in the field of chemical analysis and physical chemistry.

The organic chemical synthesis laboratory of AG Internal link opens in the same window:Schmidt at HFU is equipped with several synthesis fume hoods for preparative chemistry, as well as workstations for the work-up of organic syntheses using various techniques (liquid/liquid extraction, rotary evaporators, flash column chromatography). Syntheses with inert gas technology are also possible here, which make it possible to produce oxygen- and water-sensitive chemical products (the so-called Schlenk technique). The Flow Chemistry Starter Kit of the company Little Things Factory in which continuous synthesis strategies can be optimised on a small scale was put into operation in the summer semester of 2021.

Common, simple analytical methods such as melting point measurement, refractometry or titration are complemented by various instrumental analytical methods:

Our benchtop NMR instrument from Magritek (Spinsolve 60 Carbon) and our Bruker Avance 200 NMR spectrometer complements allow structure elucidation by 1D (1H, 13C, 19F) and 2D (homo- and heteronuclear) methods as well as quantification of chemical compounds in different samples (e.g. quantification of ethanol in fermentation mashes). The special feature of the Spinsolve 60 Carbon is that the use of deuterated solvents is not necessary due to an internal deuterium standard.

Furthermore, two Perkin Elmer Lambda Bio Photometers, as well as a Waters Acquity UPLC system for qualitative and quantitative analysis are available.

Current research areas of AG Schmidt are:

Publications on the above topics and others from the Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences (one of the strongest in research at HFU) can be found on the Internal link opens in the same window:Institute for Precision Medicine page.
