Hackathon Freiburg: Digital edge for South Baden through solutions for tourism, commerce and trade

Freiburg, 17.05.2019 - The Hackathon Freiburg, which took place for the 5th time in 2019, is not only a special team event that focuses on the collaborative development of software and hardware. At the same time, this event helps to strengthen companies in the South Baden region in their digital transformation.

The focus of the hackathon was on the tourism, trade and crafts sectors, as these are of particular economic importance to the region. Hackathon participants developed innovative ideas in response to current challenges in these industries and realize prototypes (e.g. helpful apps, programs, etc.). However, it was not only programmers and web developers who participated, but also designers, changers and interested citizens*.

The Hackathon took place from June 28 to 30, 2019 at the Carl-Schurz-Haus (Eisenbahnstraße 58-62, 79098 Freiburg im Breisgau) under the patronage of Lord Mayor Martin Horn. Organizers were bwcon, Carl-Schurz-Haus, DIGIHUB Südbaden, digital.freiburg, Foundersclub Freiburg and the universities of Furtwangen and Offenburg. The event was realized through the kind support of the Haufe Group, Hubert Burda Media, badenIT, BZ.medien, highQ and kultwerk.

FindMyBike, Frinder and FREIBURG CONNECT were the winners of the previous year's hackathon on the topic of SmartCity. The winners of the 5th Hackathon were chosen by Hanna Böhme (FWTM), Prof. Dr. Stephan Trahasch (HS Offenburg), Marion Ziegler-Jung (Wirtschaftsförderung Lörrach), Prof. Dr. Christian Fries (HS Furtwangen), Prof. Dr. Lengsfeld (Uni Freiburg) and Manfred Neufang (BZ.medien). The three winning teams received a cash prize of €1,000. In addition, BZ.medien donated a special prize as a media achievement.

The hackathon weekend was preceded by workshops with industry representatives, in which the respective challenges were discussed and perspectives and opportunities uncovered. Based on these, the digital solutions were designed from Friday evening to Sunday noon. Then, in a new, third stage, the aim was to design a suitable, viable business model so that the designed prototype became a market-ready product. BadenCampus supported the winners of the hackathon in this process.
