Prizes and awards for university members at International Research Symposium
The skills and research expertise in medical technology at Furtwangen University (HFU) are also bearing fruit internationally. Last year, the Institute of Technical Medicine (ITeM) at HFU received a Best Paper Award at the World Congress of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), which was awarded to a medical technology team for the first time in the history of this conference. And at the recent “Biological and Medical Systems” (BMS 2024) specialist symposium for medical technology organised by ITeM at HFU, several scientific contributions from HFU were awarded prizes by the international programme committee. Two first prizes and two second prizes in a total of three competitions demonstrate the current exceptional position of university research, which has also benefited from the continuous support of regionally based industrial companies. One of these is KARL STORZ SE & Co. KG. Dr. Johannes Fallert was able to present the “KARL STORZ Best Paper Award” on the last day of the conference, with prize money totaling €1750.
This year's IFAC BMS 2024 symposium, which looks back on a long-standing tradition and is held every three years in different countries, received a great deal of positive feedback and set a new attendance record with around 150 participants. Participants praised not only the organisation of the host, the Institute of Technical Medicine, but also the innovative concept with the inclusion of several keynote speakers from industry, who each introduced special topics with their keynote speeches. New ideas, such as the specialisation of medicine and care for women, were also introduced and discussed lively.

- The KARL STORZ Best Paper Award went to Dr. Bernhard Laufer (ITeM/HFU), Roxanne Jackson (TU Berlin) and Dr. Rebecca Emanuel (University of Canterbury, NZ).
