Furtwangen Campus

The Furtwangen Campus, the original and largest of the 3 campuses, is located in the centre of the small, picturesque town of Furtwangen (c. 10,000 inhabitants), in the heart of the beautiful Black Forest. Furtwangen was historically an important clockmaking town and the university has its origins in the former clockmaking school. The university has been transformed over the last few decades into a modern campus, home to 5 faculties:

  • Business Administration and Engineering
  • Business Information Systems
  • Computer Science
  • Digital Media
  • Health, Safety, Society

Nevertheless it has retained its intimate atmosphere, and small student groups and outstanding support services mean students at our Furtwangen campus enjoy ideal study conditions. The area around Furtwangen offers endless outdoor leisure activities such as mountain biking, climbing, hiking, snowboarding and skiing — both downhill and cross-country. At the end of a day in the clear, fresh forest air, students can relax in one of the cosy, traditional pubs and restaurants of the town, perhaps with a glass of traditionally-brewed local beer and a some local specialities, such as spätzle (a kind of Swabian noodles) or Black Forest ham.

And at the weekends, there are plenty of fun and interesting places to visit. The university city of Freiburg can be reached in about 45 minutes by car and the French province of Alsace, the Swiss city of Basel, or beautiful Lake Constance are all close enough for day-trips. The university's International Center organizes a range of inexpensive trips and activities for students every semester, for example excursions to Heidelberg or Berlin, visits to the opera in Stuttgart, or skiing and hiking trips

Schwenningen Campus

The Schwenningen Campus is situated in the twin town of Villingen-Schwenningen (c. 80,000 inhabitants) approximately 30 kilometres east of Furtwangen. It is home to 3 universities so it has a large student population, many of whom are internationals. In the past Schwenningen was a world-famous clock-making town employing thousands of local people in its factories. Nowadays the factories have gone and Schwenningen is a bustling town with shops, cafes and restaurants in an attractive pedestrian centre. Students can take advantage of all the amenities the town has to offer including a modern indoor swimming pool, an arena where the local ice hockey team plays in the German league, and several cinemas, which also show films in English.

The campus is located in the centre of Schwenningen in the historic setting of the Kienzle clock factory. The campus architecture is an eclectic mix of converted industrial space and ultra-modern buildings, including the award-winning library completed in 2011. In summer students relax in the beautifully-landscaped parkland, with beach volleyball court, located immediately adjacent to the campus.

There are 3 faculties on this campus:

  • HFU Business School
  • Mechanical and Medical Engineering
  • Medical and Life Sciences

The Schwenningen campus has a wide range of student organizations and clubs who regularly host their own business, social and sports events so there's always something happening around campus. And the multitude of indoor and outdoor recreational activities Schwenningen has to offer mean there is no shortage of things to do off campus either.

Schwenningen is also an ideal location for exploring Europe. Stuttgart, Constance and Freiburg are a one hour train trip away and France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy are all easily reachable for weekend trips.

Tuttlingen Campus

The newest and smallest campus in Tuttlingen (c. 35,000 inhabitants) is located in an area of lush green countryside, commonly known as "Medical Valley", approximately 30 kilometres east of Villingen-Schwenningen and 60 kilometres east of Furtwangen. The town is built around the Honberg Hill, site of a ruined medieval fort, nowadays used as a picturesque location for festivals and concerts in summer. Tuttlingen is a world centre of medical equipment production, home to more than 300 surgical equipment companies, with 50% of the world's surgical equipment manufactured here.

The campus currently has one faculty - The Faculty of Industrial Technologies. HFU's youngest campus in Tuttlingen offers degrees powered by industry. Industry works hand-in-hand with the university to design courses and provide teaching staff. Case studies and assignments are often sourced directly from partner companies and students receive their practical experience on their doorstep in local companies.
