VORTRAG ENTFÄLLT A Very British Affair? The Story of Brexit

Studium Generale Vortrag in englischer Sprache am Campus Furtwangen

Der Vortrag von Dr. Andrew Mycock muss leider entfallen. Wir suchen nach einem Erstatztermin.

This lecture will argue that the Story of Brexit is one whose origins are founded in the United Kingdom's colonial past. It will consider how the legacies of empire defined British membership of the European Union, drawing attention to how narratives established in the late 19th century concerning the Anglosphere have continued to inform contemporary visions of 'Global Britain'. The lecture will also explore how Brexit has challenged the constitutional and political foundations of the UK state, dividing the established political parties and the general public alike. The lecture will conclude by assessing the future implications of the Story of Brexit for the United Kingdom.

Dr. Andrew Mycock is a Reader in Politics at the University of Huddersfield. He has published widely on British politics, with particular focus on the legacies of empire and constitutional affairs. His other academic research has explored areas such as youth democratic engagement and participation, history education, and the politics of war commemoration, and youth citizenship policy-making. Dr Mycock was appointed to serve on the UK Government’s Youth Citizenship Commission between 2008-9 and is currently co-leading a Leverhulme Trust project on Lowering the Voting Age in the UK.
